From malicious software, Malware is software designed specifically to interfere with, damage or otherwise disrupt a system. Adware and Spyware are often classified under the rubric of Malware. Malware severity runs the gamut from the mere nuisance, such as unsolicited pop-up ads, to dangerous parasites that can bring a system to a halt. These dangerous applications include homepage hijacks, Trojans and keystroke loggers. "FREE" games, music, graphics, toolbars and/or applications are where Spyware and other threats are often hidden.
Phishing is the use of e-mail and a link to a fraudulent Web site to lure you into providing the "phishers" with personal information such as Social Security number, account numbers, credit card numbers, and other identifiers. Typically, the e-mail will seem to come from a large bank or major retailer and will include a form for information to "update your account" or "confirm your password" for security purposes. This information is then transmitted to an unauthorized third party and used for identity theft.
